Updated 24-70 f/2.8?

Over at the Canon Rumors blog, Canon should be announcing a new version of the venerable 24-70 f/2.8L in January, just prior to the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Vegas. Their source, however, claims that among the upgrades to the new and improved 24-70L II, image stabilization (IS) will not be included.

If true, this is unfortunate. The current 24-70L is a great lens already but deceptively heavy, especially after you've been slinging it around at an event for a few hours. At 2.1lbs, it's a full pound lighter than its big brother, the 70-200 f/2.8L IS II, but only about half a pound heavier than its closest cousin, the 24-105 f/4L IS. Yes, comparing the 24-70 and 70-200 is like apples and oranges since they play in different sandboxes, but if you see a need to include stabilization in the 1.5lb 24-105, why not the 2.1lb 24-70?
